In the News: Local teachers fight school opening

TEACHERS AGAINST SCHOOL REOPENING
Teachers at PS/IS 276 in Battery Park City published an open letter in The Trib calling for school buildings to remain closed to students and teachers this fall. “Schools are not safe to reopen on September 10th,” a group of about 60 teachers wrote. “We call on all school staff and principals from District 2 and around the city to stand together in voicing our concerns for the safety of all students and educators…While we prefer to be with our students in person, the current blended model of learning put forth by the NYC DOE fails to address serious concerns.”

The teachers sighted an open letter from the principals of District 15 in Brooklyn that called on the mayor to keep the schools closed, as has the UFT and other unions representing school staff. A letter from the CSA — the union representing supervisors and administrators — said, “It is abundantly clear that the Department of Education has not provided you with the guidance and relevant information necessary for you to effectively plan for the opening of school buildings and offices in the fall. As each day passes without clear guidance and safety assurances, it becomes less likely that we will be ready to reopen in September.”
