2020 Shop-Local Gift Guide: Books of Tribeca

There’s never a year where I am not buying a pile of books for Christmas, and this year I’m going with Written in Tribeca titles that are new (or close to it) this year. Comment with any additions and I will add to the list.

HEIRS ON FIRE by Jon Pepper
In the satirical novel “Heirs on Fire,” Battery Park City resident Jon Pepper explores the high altitudes of American wealth, privilege, social standing and business competition with humor — and much of it is set here in the neighborhood. NB: this is the sequel to “A Turn in Fortune.” (And stay tuned for more from Jon here.)

YOUNG GIFTED AND BLACK: The Lumpkin-Boccuzzi Family Collection of Contemporary Art
The beautiful coffee table book features a range of contemporary artworks from the collection of two Tribecans. African-American artists predominate, with a special emphasis on emerging voices of the last 25 years.

HOW TO DRESS AN EGG by Houseman’s Ned Baldwin and Peter Kaminsky
Ruth Reichl says: “This book will make you hungry and happy. It will send you into the kitchen again and again!” I say it’s great looking, includes the fab drawings from Gerardo Blumenkrantz, and makes a great gift.

THE DEAD RABBIT
Mixology & Mayhem: Possibly one of the more creative books about drinking, it combines tall tales, graphic novel-type illustrations AND drink recipes from the founders. (This is really art)
Drinks Manual: Recipes, tips and insights from the famed mixologists. (This is my go-to holiday house gift, along with a shaker or shot glass)
Comic Book Menu Series: Five comic books follow the exploits of the rabbit himself, and of course there are cocktails along the way.
(PS: their webstore is loaded with good merch.)

NO TIME LIKE THE FUTURE: AN OPTIMIST CONSIDERS MORTALITY
By Michael J. Fox
Tribecan Nelle Fortenberry is Fox’s longtime producing partner, and as he describes in the acknowledgements of his fourth book, this “simply would not be a book without her.” Despite his struggles with Parkinson’s, this is book is about resilience and hope — and humor. Just noting that it is “frequently bought together” with Barack Obama’s latest.

WINTER OF THE WOLF by Martha Hunt Handler
An exploration in grief, suicide, spiritualism and Inuit culture, the novel by local resident Handler follows 15-year-old Bean who is determined to unravel the mystery of her brother Sam’s death.

SANT AMBROEUS: THE COFFEE BAR COOKBOOK
The local chain of Italian pastry shops has a new cookbook out, with 75 recipes from coffee drinks to tramezzini to gelatos, and you can walk right over to Brookfield and grab one. Pair it with a panettone!

THE FISHERMAN’S WIFE by Stephanie Villani
I can’t think of a better present for your friend who is still pining for Blue Moon Fish’s booth at the Greenmarket. The Villanis retired on Halloween after 32 years of selling their catch in the neighborhood. It’s full of salty tales and recipes (not always salty on the latter) and is organized by fish.
