Seen & Heard: Support for Puffy’s employee

FUNDRAISER FOR PUFFY’S EMPLOYEE
Puffy’s had some sad news on its social media just before the holidays, and they have created a GoFundMe page to help: “It saddens us to let you know that we lost our dear friend and brother Ivan Mendez suddenly to heart failure Thursday evening. He was an incredible father, friend, brother and uncle who always put his family first. Ivan was a pivotal part of the workplace at Puffy’s Tavern as well as the Brooklyn Brewhouse where he tirelessly worked many years prior. Ivan underwent heart surgery this past fall and a follow-up operation was scheduled for January. His death was sudden and unexpected. We are raising money for his funeral arrangements as well as financial support for his two daughters back home in Mexico. Please consider helping out his loved ones through this difficult time as they navigate through this tragedy and move forward in life without him. Donations will go directly to his family.”

NEW INSTRUMENT STORE ON CHAMBERS
In perhaps the most surprise retail move in the pandemic era, David Gage Instruments, which has had the storefront on Walker for decades, is now operating under the name a New Jersey string instrument operation Finlay + Gage from a storefront on Chambers between Church and West Broadway. (Thanks to S. and J. for the photos, the latter of whom filed it in the “Will Wonders Never Cease Department.”) They also have a store in Maplewood, NJ.

A PRO EATER TOURS CHINATOWN
Eater’s Robert Sietsema (formerly of the Voice) goes on a three-day eating bender in Chinatown by bike, making his way through Tasty Hand-Pulled Noodles, Nom Wah Tea Parlor, Jing Fong and a few others.

  1. The Finlay + Gage business was previously on Walker Street but the owner is re-doing the building so they couldn’t stay. They are locals! This will be a wonderful addition to the Chambers street block.
