In the News: A vision for Canal and Varick

A VISION FOR CANAL AND VARICK
YIMBY has renderings of 2 Hudson Square, the empty lot at Canal between Varick and Sixth Avenue being designed by SHoP Architects.

LENDER TO FORECLOSE ON ANDAZ HOTEL
Crain’s reports that the lenders behind the Andaz Hotel at 75 Wall “are moving to foreclose on the building over a $55 million loan that went unpaid by its current owner, the Hakimian Organization. The property was redeveloped by Hakimian [in 2006-2009] and is now composed of two portions: a 253-room hotel currently operated by Hyatt and 346 residential condo apartments. After months of default, the lender, Annaly Commercial Real Estate Group, wants to take possession of the hotel portion of the building, according to a lawsuit filed in Manhattan Supreme Court on Wednesday.” The hotel is currently closed.

THE YURMANS IN THEIR ELEMENTS
Town & Country has a feature on Tribeca residents David and Sybil Yurman, who just released a new collection called Elements. “Lockdown was a prolific period for creatives Sybil and David Yurman. Partners in life and business, the jewelry designing couple, who have been married for 52 years, hunkered down in their Tribeca loft with neighboring his and hers design studios, and in between cooking, painting, and listening to Miles Davis, they created Elements, a deeply personal collection which they unveiled today.”

BRADY LIBRARY OWNER WANTS HIS GUN BACK
The co-owner of the Brandy Library is suing the NYPD for refusing to reup his gun permit, The Post reports. “Leifer said he needs the harder-to-get “carry” permit because he does business deals and takes client retainers that sometimes involve a ‘substantial amount of cash.’ He’s also a partner in two bars — Brandy Library in Tribeca and Copper & Oak on the Lower East Side — which ‘also generate cash.'” Yipes.

  1. wow nice to know! I love David Yurman jewelry! My favorite store in Soho!! Never knew they are my neighbors!

  2. “Class A office space is planned to occupy floors seven through 25, with the podium levels measuring 19,000 square feet per floor and the upper stories spanning 16,000 square feet apiece with 16-foot-high ceilings.”

Just what NYC needs, another 300,000 SF of office space…

  3. Not only do we not need more office space in Lower Manhattan, we definitely do not need more numbingly boring and intrusive architecture.

  4. Just to show you one of the nicer buildings that used to be at Canal and Varick until maybe 12 years ago, this was later a Chemical Bank, then a Chase branch https://digitalcollections.nypl.org/items/510d47e2-eec7-a3d9-e040-e00a18064a99

  5. Robert Ripps That was my bank and I loved that building. Had day dreams of having a painting studio there above my bank. It was a rich dream.
