Soon to come at 1 White: the vertical Nutopian Embassy

The rep for the team at 1 White — as lore has it, it was called the Nutopian Embassy by John Lennon and Yoko Ono — says the restaurant is aiming for an April opening. They are still in the “plywood phase” but I can already tell you I love the black subway tile.

The restaurant is the product of sommelier Dustin Wilson and chef Austin Johnson, both disciples of Danny Meyer from Eleven Madison Park. Wilson is also featured in the movie “Somm,” which is a great watch.

Neighbors are already a bit frustrated by the build-out of their curbside structure (see comment on the site here) but I connected them with the owners, and it seemed a dialog would soon be initiated.

Last we heard when the liquor license was approved in May 2019, the restaurant will have 530 square feet per floor, occasional live music, a wine bar with six or seven seats on the first floor and seating in small batches, as the footprint allows, on the upper floors. The whole thing is 2,800 square feet.

  1. Not to be overlooked was Chef Johnson’s cooking at Frenchie’s in Paris. Can’t wait for this new arrival.
