In the News: The State of the Restaurant Industry

THE STATE OF THE RESTAURANT INDUSTRY
Our own Tracy Nieporent (Tribeca Grill, Bâtard) is featured in a conversation on the state of the restaurant industry in a video hosted by Latin Business Today. It also includes Carlos Gaytán, the first chef of Mexican descent to score a Michelin star, and Danny Meyer of Gramercy Tavern, Shake Shack, Blue Smoke, etc etc.

FAMILY SUES SOHO KAREN AND ARLO HOTEL
The family of a Black teenager who was falsely accused of stealing a woman’s cellphone at the Arlo hotel is suing the woman and the hotel for engaging in racial profiling, according to 1010 WINS. “The lawsuit alleged Arlo Hotels violated New York City’s Human Rights Law, which prohibits discrimination in public accommodations such as hotels. The family said the hotel ‘failed to protect’ Keyon in its lobby. The teen and his father, Keyon Harrold Sr., were guests at the hotel while the woman who made the false accusation, Miya Ponsetto, was not.”

CITY LIMITS OPED ON SOHO REZONE
City Limits published an opinion piece supporting the Soho rezoning: “Right now, we have an exciting opportunity to address some very real concerns about rezoning SoHo to allow for retail and open up this neighborhood beyond the outdated idea that the community should be exclusively reserved for artists, which should be modified to provide and include new affordable housing. While we need to be measured and careful in the way we approach this, the proposed rezoning is an opportunity to holistically plan for the future of SoHo.”

  1. The Soho / Noho rezoning issue is not without precedent.

Tribeca was re-zoned for retail and residential in the 1970s and 1990s while retaining the existing joint-living-work-quarters-for-artists uses for current residents.

Soho and Noho are no longer artist colonies, not matter how much one pines for the past. One doubts most of the certified artists in their 60s and 70s even use the large spaces to practice their art any longer. The opposition is NIMBYism at its worst IMO.

  2. Frenchette reopens tomorrow (Tuesday 3/30). They’ve also been hosting a Vietnamese popup called Has Dac Biet on Sundays/Mondays. Just ate there—fantastic. Yves opens Thursday too.

  3. Do we know what is going in the empty pit next to Google?

  4. Thank goodness Keyon Harrold Jr. was with his father. The situation may have turned out very different if he wasn’t. I wish them luck with their suit.
