The movies are back in the neighborhood

Regal Battery Park will reopen — after 13 months and 10 days, but who’s counting — on Friday, April 23. Showing will be “Mortal Kombat,” “Godzilla vs. Kong” and “The Unholy” among others. (Thanks to JL for the eyeball.) And The Roxy Cinema will open on April 30.

The full schedule with all movies and showtimes is not up now, but be published soon here. The theaters are allowed to operate now at 25 percent, with a max of 50 per auditorium. Not sure what that gets us at each screen over there, but my guess is tickets will move fast.

The British company Cineworld, which owns Regal in the US, closed its 787 theaters in 10 countries last March; some then opened in late summer, but then the movie chain closed all its US operations in October, citing not just the pandemic but also the lack of movies to show as part of the problem. They’ve been slowly reopening this month: Union Square and Astoria are already open, as are a bunch around the country. See the full list here.
