Seen & Heard: Holding down the fort

HOLDING DOWN THE FORT
A few tents popped up for the night in Rockefeller last night, keeping the trees from the chainsaw till this plan for a monument to essential workers gets resolved.

DOWN TO THE ABSENTEE VOTERS
OMG. I had this post ready to go last night, just as an ICYMI, and now the DoE has pulled all its posted results. Holy cow. Should we be surprised? The unofficial results from Round 1 are still up, however.
It’s down to Eric Adams, with 368,898 votes and 51.1 percent of the vote, and Kathryn Garcia, with 352,990 votes and 48.9 percent of the vote. There are 125,000 absentee ballots to be counted. It’s fun to click through the rounds here, if you want to see how it all went down once candidates were eliminated and their votes were redistributed. Brad Lander and Corey Johnson are also very close.

JULY 1-5 MUSIC AT SEAPORT
From July 1-5 at 5p, the Seaport will host a rotating lineup of free live music featuring musicians and DJs on the Fulton Street stage located on the cobblestones.

ACTION AT THE BEAN?
The Anish Kapoor sculpture at 56 Leonard looks like it might be making progress — or at least getting some interior fixes. I have been unsuccessful in getting an official update from anyone but will keep trying…

  1. What sense does it make to issue preliminary results in a ranked-choice election when the absentee ballots aren’t factored in? It’s a meaningless report since they will have to start from scratch in a couple of weeks.

    • What sense does it make to issue preliminary results when the phony, test ballots are counted as if they were actual ballots?

That said, they did this because the unreasonably long absentee ballot deadline risks tarnishing the unrelated use of ranked choice voting. Voters think they are waiting for RCV, when they are actually waiting for absentee ballots to be tabulated.

  2. Thank you to everyone fighting to keep our beloved park. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

  3. The Anish Kapoor Bean sculpture is a mystery and an epic eyesore for the last 2 years. Keep asking.
