Work on monument is paused through July 6

The work on the monument dedicated to essential workers will be paused through the weekend, according to the Battery Park City Authority, and I assume that includes the official July 4 holiday on Monday, July 5. Which means a few families can go back to sleeping in their own beds for the next couple days.

And this statement came from George Tsunis, the chairman of the BPCA: “Over the next week the Battery Park City Authority will continue to engage with our neighbors, representatives of essential workers and the Governor’s office to discuss the location of the monument in Battery Park City to ensure it is one that’s optimal for the entire community. Essential workers have dedicated their time, energy and lives to helping New York get through the pandemic and it is an honor to support and memorialize them with a monument that’s as loved and respected as they are.”

  1. Many news agencies are covering this, including:

I once read a statistic detailing the number of square feet of park space per citizen in each neighborhood. Ours was comparatively quite low. Does anyone else know about this and if so where the data comes from?

    • Not really. You can look at the NY4P Open Space Index, where the goal is one acre of park land for every 1000 residents. Downtown ranges from 1.5 to 2. But I say “not really” because Chinatown rates among the lowest and its just around the corner. There is also an IBO report on this same topic. Of course this was different before the construction of Hudson River Park in the early ’90s…

  2. Hello, is this confirmed? Can you add the source i? Thanks!

  3. Good news, but Tsunis saying ” … to discuss the location of the monument in Battery Park City …” indicates this memorial is not leaving BPC, even if it leaves Rockefeller Park.

If the goalposts of the argument will only move that far: Belvedere Plaza is already a paved grove of trees awaiting a stone & flame.

“indicates this memorial is not leaving BPC, even if it leaves Rockefeller Park.”

i dont think anyone has an issue with this at all, thats the goal.
yes: memorial- no: ripping down the canopy of trees and reducing grass (and putting a flame in the middle of where everyone plays)

  4. Nice progress. Good to hear this morning.
