In the News: Truffles apartments for sale, eventually

TRUFFLES TRIBECA GETS A GUT RENO
Related bought Truffles Tribeca in 2019, and now The Financial Times reports that the company has emptied the building at 34 Desbrosses and Washington and has secured a loan that will allow it to change the interiors into bigger apartments and replace the facade. The apartments would then be sold. “Related bought the complex for $260m in 2019, seeking to capitalise on the transformation of Tribeca from a faded commercial district into an expensive neighbourhood.” Were we really a faded commercial district??

PHOTO ESSAY ON 9/11
CBS News has assembled a slideshow of pictures of all three terrorist attacks on 9/11, though most of the photos were taken of and in the neighborhood. There are some that I have never seen.

LAST HURDLE FOR SOHO/NOHO REZONING
amNY reported on Borough President Gale Brewer’s recent hearing on the Soho/Noho rezoning plan from the city — the last step in the advisory process.

WESTFIELD SUES STARBUCKS AND VICE VERSA
Crain’s reports that the Westfield mall at the Oculus has sued Starbucks since it never reopened its store there after the pandemic. And Starbucks sued Westfield in January to end a lease at a different location in the mall since Westfield had never gotten the space ready for them. “In March this year, Starbucks tried to terminate the lease under a provision allowing it to do so if its revenues fell below $2.5 million for the year. However, the option could only be exercised if the store was open and operating according to the lease, the mall operator claimed.”

  1. Faded commercial district? I’d say faded industrial district — in the late 1980s! We moved in in 1993 and co-op conversions were well underway in the southern part of the neighborhood (N. Moore and south), and, if my memory is correct, the northern end really took off a couple of years after 9/11.

In other news, the street seating patio for Reade Street Pub was dismantled on Tuesday, leaving a big mess of sand (from street de-icing over the winter is my best guess) and mud on the street. after they removed the floor decking.

I was walking on Chambers yesterday and saw that construction was well underway something called Daily Goods at #86. From the signage it seems to be a branch of the juice+ place that’s on John Street and in Chelsea Market. The retail on that side of that block got hit really hard by Covid so it cheered me up even though it’s not the type of place I’d ordinarily frequent.
