Seen & Heard: Battery Park as Native lands

BATTERY PARK AS NATIVE LANDS
The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian just opened “Native New York,” a journey to 12 significant places in New York, stretching from the shores of Long Island through Manhattan to Niagara Falls. The exhibition uses objects, media, interactives and narrative comics to demonstrate how New York is and always has been a Native place. A wooden path leads to 12 locations identified with their English and Native place names, including Battery Park/Kapsee (the sharp rock place)

JAMES COHAN PART DEUX
The gallerist James Cohan, who opened his eponymous gallery here in October 2019, has opened a second gallery on the 2nd floor 52 Walker, adjacent to the gallery’s flagship 48 Walker Street location. The new location will house three gallery spaces, including a large, south-facing windowed main gallery and a separate viewing room. The inaugural exhibition will be works by Indian artist Gauri Gill, her first solo gallery exhibition in New York following a recent show at MoMA PS1. Presented simultaneously with Gill’s works at James Cohan’s 48 Walker Street location will be a solo exhibition of works by Nigerian multimedia artist and activist Emeka Ogboh, whose recent “Lost Person” poster campaign across Germany led to the country’s returning of looted Benin Bronzes.
