In the News: A suit after the parties at 1 Harrison

1 HARRISON GOT TRASHED
The landlord at 1 Harrison is suing his former tenant for hosting wild parties that resulted in the cops coming several times — and it sounds like in The Post that he also trashed the place. “The owners filed a new case in Manhattan Supreme Court Tuesday seeking a total of $282,670 from David and his mom Jean Elbaum-David — who also signed the lease —for four months of unpaid rent, late fees, violations charges from the Department of Buildings and Sanitation, legal fees and for the cost to completely overhaul the place.”

THE FEDS AT 86 CHAMBERS
This looked like good news to me: The Commercial Observer reports that the US Department of Justice has renewed its lease for 72,258 square feet at 86 Chambers. The General Services Administration, which handles real estate deals for the federal government, renewed the lease for the entire third through sixth floors in the 28-story building.

THE SECRETS OF FIDI
Untapped Cities has a list of the “secrets of Fidi,” some of which I did find to be a surprise: the cornice on the Stock Exchange is copper, not marble; there’s a cryptogram at Trinity Church graveyard; and there’s a plane on top of 77 Water. Fun to add to your walking tour when the guests arrive next week.

WHIPLASH ON CITY REGS FOR OUTDOOR DINING
Last year things got crazy with the rules for outdoor dining sheds, and the saga continues: the city is now NOT allowing propane heaters, when before that was all you *could* have on the sidewalk, according to Crain’s. There is a grant for $5K (for businesses that have less than $1 million revenue) to pay for new natural gas or electric heaters.

  1. The grant for natural gas or electric heaters is pointless. Propane heaters required a restaurant to add zero new infrastructure. Natural gas requires expensive and time-intensive piping work and filing and inspections with Department of Buildings. Electric heaters take up a lot of electricity, and expanding electrical service with Con Edison takes many months (and can be very costly).

  2. Electrical connections will be shoddy — extension cords taped to streets so people don’t trip, water, electrocution!!!??? dangling wires, more of a fire hazard than propane. I hope this regulation is taken up and fought against. And yes, getting any kind of service from the city — gas, electrical will take too long to be of use to restaurants.
