Seen & Heard: Back to its night club roots

BACK FROM WHENCE IT CAME
It was so refreshing to see the windows let in the light at Canal and West Broadway, when Canal Street Oysters renovated the corner space that once was the Canal Room and Haus. Sigh. Now that prominent corner is right back where it started — this time as a night club called The Palace — and while the windows are not blacked out, they are hung with dark curtains. I may try to learn more; in the meantime read about the very handsome 1897 Rawitzer building through Tom Miller’s post here.

1ST PRECINCT COMMUNITY MEETING
The NYPD has a program that I think is new called Build The Block, and its meeting for the 1st Precinct is tomorrow, Jan. 12, 6p on Zoom. See the meeting ID at the bottom. It will be run by PO Max Solomon. “At this meeting, we will discuss relevant crime and quality of life issues, but this is also an opportunity for the community to present issues or questions they might have. If you do have questions, we encourage you to ask beforehand, so we can research the issue and in some cases incorporate it into our presentation. Contact email: Max.Solomon@NYPD.org.

JUNGSIK DINING SHEDS GET TRUNCATED
B. saw the dining sheds being dismantled at Jungsik, but they only removed some of them to make room for construction going on above at the Mercantile Exchange building…

THE CRAFT STUDIO’S NEW DIGS
The Craft Studio closed on Duane Park during the quarantine but happily reopened right next door in the former Roller Rabbit store, which is much bigger than I remembered and now has an expansive craft area set up in the back.

  1. The easting sheds were removed, I believe, because the commercial space occupied by communication workers fund was sold. Maybe the new owner wanted them removed. Just guessing.

  2. Build a Block is only new-ish as I’ve attended several now. One clarification, there are actually 4 sectors for the 1st Pct B-a-B and the one tomorrow is for Sector A, which is roughly Chambers/Frankfurt on the north, Broadway on the east and Wall St. on the south. Most of Tribeca and Northern BPC is Sector C. Since the discussions are very local it only makes sense to join the call for the sector you live or work in. To confirm your sector, enter the address near the bottom of https://www1.nyc.gov/site/nypd/bureaus/patrol/precincts/1st-precinct.page

  3. Cannot wait till all of those hideous big boxes are removed from Jungsik.
