Art in Tribeca: Kobra at the World Trade Center

The muralist Eduardo Kobra has a new installation at the site of 2 WTC — thanks to Jolene Howard for keeping an eye on the street artist news in the neighborhood.

Kobra completed the mural on one weekend in October, painting five women representing the continents of Africa, America, Asia, Europe and Oceania. The paintings move across the sheds and sort of through the Oculus Beer Garden, so that you can see it as one single image best from a distance.

Born in 1975 in south São Paulo, Kobra has completed hundreds of murals across the world, including a beauty on Hudson and Clarkson.

  1. Semi related, mini rant that the “oculus beer garden” really missed the mark. Poor beer selection and just AWFUL music. Feels more like a Chilis than a good neighborhood spot.

  2. The complex, designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and modeled after Byzantine churches of Hagia Sophia and the Church of the Holy Savior in Istanbul, was designed to glow in the evening hours, an ever-present beacon of hope on the World Trade Center campus.

  3. Our family loves Kobra’s work! Thanks for the tip, Pam. We’ll visit this new mural soon.

  4. Discover artifacts found in the wreckage of the former Twin Towers, the first responding vehicles, and the planes that hit the towers. Continue your self-guided visit by exploring the One World Observatory. Gaze at the grand view from the deck, which on a clear day allows you to view up to 4 different states.

  5. I saw this a couple months ago on surprise after going to post office. Loved it. Wasn’t sure what it was till reading this.
