Seen & Heard: Local restaurants expand uptown

MARC FORGIONE OPENS WINE BAR
Marc Forgione’s other restaurant, Peasant, has crafted a subterranean wine bar in its cellar, and fitted it with a bar door, wood-paneled walls, stone columns and old wood tables. There will be wine selections from each of Italy’s 20 regions and a menu centered around wood-fired Italian cooking, house-made charcuterie and breads.

HOMEMADE BY MIRIAM OPENS UPTOWN
While ours is being renovated for indoor dining (it should be open today or later this week), Homemade by Miriam has also opened an additional location at 300 Amsterdam and 74th Street.

ICE SCULPTURE CONTEST ON GOVS ISLAND
This is a wacky but fun idea: Governors Island is planning an ice sculpture show for Feb. 26, and the sculptures will be made by local artists. The deadline is Feb. 9 to send in a proposal. Apply here. Ten projects will be chosen by a jury and selected artists or teams will receive an award of $2,000 to participate, and will be provided with tools, production materials, and will be matched with a professional ice carver from Okamoto Studio to complete the work on the day of the event. Sculptures will remain on view on Governors Island until they melt.

HOTEL INDIGO HAS OPENED
The Hotel Indigo Wall Street at 120 Water (that’s a rendering above) recently opened. It has 127 rooms spread over 29 floors, with two rooftop bars and a lobby bar and restaurant. In 2019, according to the Downtown Alliance, there were 12 hotels in the pipeline in their district, which goes from Murray south.

  1. Hotel Indigo is at 120 Water Street, not Wall. The new Wall Street Hotel (not yet opened) is next door to the south, at the corner of Wall and Water.

  2. Peasant has always had a wine bar — I believe it’s simply reopening.
