Seen & Heard: Il Mulino will reopen today

IL MULINO IS BACK
…so says their Instagram (and a couple commenters saw the work going on). It seems their reservation system is not yet working — or maybe they are already sold out! The parent company has had some struggles: first they declared bankruptcy for seven of their restaurants (all outside the city) in July 2020, and then there was a suit over liquor licenses and intellectual property. Ours is one of five in the city; it opened in 2018.

NEWS FROM HUDSON EATS
J. sent word that Umami Burger has definitely closed at Brookfield’s Hudson Eats food court, but Ani Ramen has opened after a few months of anticipation.

AFRICAN BURIAL GROUND WILL OPEN MARCH 31
All during covid I thought the National Parks Service was doing work on the African Burial Ground, but it turns out they just put scaffolding around it to protect it. And since it was closed every time I have gone by since the pandemic ebbed (a bit), I started to wonder. Turns out it is closed all winter from Nov. 1 to March 31, and the hours are 10a to 4p Tuesday to Saturday after that. They don’t make it easy to visit…

APRON OF PIER 57 IS OPEN
If you are in the habit of walking or running to Chelsea on the river, now you can add a spur at Pier 57, the old MaBSTOA bus terminal that will soon be Google offices and a food court run by the James Beard Foundation (coming in fall). In the meantime, it’s a great lap to see the façade on the western end.

  1. Biggest news of the day—NYPost reports “Beefbar” restaurant signed at 105 Hudson, the old Nobu space. Never heard of it and it’s an odd name, but very welcome to see that corner activated. Article says it’s a high end global restaurant brand and this is their first US location.

In smaller news, there’s a boxing/training place opening in the ground floor of 450 Greenwich. I think it’s called The Lodge.

  2. Il Mulino – Baked Clams app $24, Spaghetti w/Clams $42, Chicken Parm $48, Branzino $65. I’ve eaten in some of the best Italian restaurants here in NYC, across America & in Italy. Their prices are outrageous & an insult. Gonna be a cold day in hell before they rip me off.

    • V. Stewart, you are absolutely correct. Their prices are ridiculous for a family neighborhood location. Just because this is Tribeca some people think anything goes price wise.
