Mayweather boxing coming to Reade Street

R. caught sight of some action at the former Exceed Physical Culture space at 97 Reade and Church — what I still think of as Bell Bates — and learned that it’s a branch of Mayweather Boxing and Fitness. The company is franchised, with nine outlets in California but only a couple here: Midtown and Manhasset on Long Island.

A quick boxing education: Floyd Mayweather Jr. (his father was also a boxer) competed between 1996 and 2015 and is regularly ranked among the top boxers of all time, pound-for-pound. He’s won 15 major world championships from super featherweight to light middleweight, a bronze medal at the 1996 Olympics and three U.S. Golden Gloves championships. Over the years, he was also regularly ranked as one of the highest paid athletes by Forbes and the highest paid pay-per-view athlete of all time.

The gym combines boxing, strength and cardio conditioning. Mayweather opened the first one in 2018 in SoCal. The Tribeca location is already on the website with a phone contact only.

Exceed left that space in October 2020; they took it over the eastern side of Bell Bates in 2013.

  1. No one can beat Martin Snow and Trinity Boxing on Duane Street. He is a true neighborhood guy and one of the nicest people you will ever meet. He does one on one training and is always available for a chat.

  2. Let’s welcome all businesses in Tribeca – glad people are investing in our area

  3. I’ll stick to Trinity and Martin. But yes all is welcome and more business in Tribeca.

  4. Absolutely. Every business that opens in an empty storefront is a win for the neighborhood but I just wanted to give a shoutout to a local neighborhood guy who makes this block a better place to live.

  5. Nah, I’m good, I welcome new businesses, but I don’t want one that puts money in the pocket of a bigot, abuser, and cheat.

  6. Still not open!!! Any updates?

  7. Still not open, and the phone is disconnected. Anyone able to look into this?
