P. sent a note saying that Red Wing Shoes, which had the earnest collection of American-made men’s shoes in a sunny shop just east of West Broadway — had closed. They had been in that spot since 2011, and in the neighborhood (first on Duane) since 2009. And here I thought retail was making a comeback…

It was one of my favorites on the Tribeca Citizen holiday shopping guide, and I am sad to see it go. They were lovely in there, and the space was charming. (Now it’s just a white box.)

The store was in fact for Grown & Sewn — the Brooklyn-born, Tribeca-raised take on classic rustic Americana by designer Rob Magness, who founded the company after his stint as a design director at Ralph Lauren. He added Red Wing Heritage (I was never exactly sure of the relationship) to his company, and to the store on Franklin, in 2017.
