In the News: Local restauranteur nabs subway stabber

CHELA OWNER HELPS COPS GRAB SUSPECT
In what is clearly not a great Tribeca welcome, The Post reports that Ronny Jaramillo, who is opening the Mexican restaurant Chela in the old Distilled space, was able to follow a deranged subway rider through the neighborhood on Tuesday until police could grab him on the street near Franklin and West Broadway. I tried to reach Jaramillo myself, but in the meantime, it seems he was riding the 1 train when he saw a nutter brandishing a knife and threatening to cut people. The guy got off the train at Franklin and Jaramillo trailed him while calling the cops. An NYPD van pulled up right away and Jaramillo said he hopped in and led them to Fernandez, whom they found several blocks away. Holy cow.

DAVID WOJNAROWICZ AT PPOW
The Times has a review of the PPOW show of David Wojnarowicz, which is only up until April 23 so you might want to run over. The show “explores the artist and author’s first significant relationship, with Jean Pierre Delage, which liberated him emotionally and changed him artistically.”

PIER 40 SITE WILL BE DEVELOPED BY ZECKENDORFS
This is not in the neighborhood, but I have been trying to figure it out what is going on there for ages and G. caught this story in The Post. Turns out the site right across from Pier 40 — just across Houston from the newly completed Google building — will be a 36-story super fancy condo developed by the Zeckendorfs. (In the photo above, it’s on the right.) Or as the Post put it: “Another ‘Limestone Jesus’ — the popular nickname for 15 Central Park West — is poised to soon rise over the Hudson River downtown.”

OPPOSITION TO SOUTH END AVE. REDESIGN?
I have not tracked this much but Streetsblog reports that some neighbors in BPC are not supportive of the Authority’s redesign of South End Avenue to widen sidewalks (good) and create a pedestrian-only zone (also good) “because they don’t want to pay for it, and don’t want to lose their ability to double-park.” “Six Battery Park City condo boards, which represent more than 1,000 households, passed a resolution in 2019 opposing the project on the grounds that the traffic light that was installed earlier that summer, since the plan was proposed, is good enough.”

  1. the development of Pier 40 by Zeckendorfs is totally disgusting.

    • Just to clarify: it is not the pier — it is the site across from the pier north of Houston between West and Washington.

  2. Love Your Block provides a unique opportunity for resident-led groups to transform and beautify their neighborhood while leveraging City services. Resident-led groups (grantees) receive a $500 grant to transform a city block in their neighborhood.
