In the News: ‘Museum’ of women coming to Soho this summer

MUSEUM OF WOMEN COMING TO SOHO
Crain’s reports that a new “museum” dedicated to empowering women will open at 480 Broadway just south of Broome in the former Topshop. (I think this is a museum in the way the Museum of Ice Cream is a museum.) From Crain’s: “The Museum of Women inked a 25,000-square-foot lease at 480 Broadway, with plans to be there for one year, said landlord Gregory Kraut of KPG Funds. The attraction is expected to feature at least 14 interactive and immersive experiences, as well as a gift shop and a commissary that sells goods from women-owned vendors. It is scheduled to debut this summer across the ground, first and second floors of the building.”

MOVING ON FROM CHUMLEY’S
Pete Wells reviews Mena, Victoria Blamey’s new restaurant in the Tribeca Gallery District (it’s on my list!) and raves: “Seasoned lightly with vadouvan, they create flavors that linger. This is one of Ms. Blamey’s skills, provoking tastes that play on the palate longer than you expect. There’s that classic dream about discovering that an apartment has a spare room nobody has ever noticed; Ms. Blamey finds new rooms within classic dishes. She enlarges them.”

FOUR WOMEN ATTACK TWO OTHERS IN FIDI
amNY reports that four women attacked two other women after a dispute, using pepper spray and a knife against a 14-year-old and a 20-year-old this weekend: 9:40 p.m. on April 23 in the vicinity of State and Bridge streets.

PUZZLE MASTER BORN IN TRIBECA
The BBC has a story on Anna Shechtman, the puzzle editor at The New Yorker who was raised in Tribeca, on her crossword career and her struggles as a young person with anorexia.

  1. You are absolutely right, the ‘Museum’ of Women, just like the ‘Museum’ of Ice Cream is not a museum at all. It is a for profit interactive experiential retail establishment. An instagram delight By calling themselves museums, such enterprises pour salt in the wounds of the hundreds of artists who still live /work in SoHo.

  2. Thank you for the Anna Schechtman mention and links. A truly intelligent and capable young person. Brava Ms. Schechtman.
