Century 21 looks like it’s coming back to Fidi

Century 21, the clothing emporium and national chain that filed for bankruptcy and closed all its doors across the country in 2020, will reopen its flagship store on Cortlandt Street in spring 2023, according to WWD, which had the exclusive report (but I read it in Crain’s).

From Crain’s: “The Gindi family, which owned the string of discount department stores, purchased its intellectual property during the bankruptcy proceedings for $9 million and announced in February 2021 its intentions to relaunch in some capacity. The store will open its doors next year, and the company will relaunch its website at the same time, Women’s Wear Daily first reported. The brand reportedly will incorporate ‘NYC’ into its name.” Legends Hospitality will help them run the location.

Crain’s says that the Gindis, who own a lot of Tribeca real estate, also own the site, though I am pretty sure they only own 25 Church Street — the big frontage shown above, which they purchased in 1993. They lease several floors at 22 Cortlandt, the office tower around the corner on the southside of the store, for which they were sued by the landlord for back rent last year. They sold 22 Cortlandt to Moshe Drizin, a big Brooklyn real estate investor, in 2012.
