New Kid on the Block: Della’s

The open window at 66 West Broadway when it was Vin sur Vingt always made me wish I was sitting there, and that feeling is back — only worse — now that Della’s has taken over the space. The new wine bar, opened by Frankly Wines buyer Liz Nicholson, has even more charm than the original wine bar at that spot and the added bonus of a big curbside space that is more pleasant than most given the relative quiet on that stretch of West Broadway.

Nicholson first dreamed up the idea during covid, after Vin sur Vingt closed. (She put it up on Kickstarter and flew past her goal of $40K: in the end 139 backers pledged at total of $54,375 to help with capital costs.) Before she bought Frankly Wines four years ago, she ran a wines-by-the-glass program as wine director at Maialino in the Gramercy Park Hotel and other spots — so she’s looking to expand on that in her own bar.

The wine list has a great range in price and provenance (see below) and I am guessing you can take home anything you liked by walking next door (when hours permit), which is a fun idea. And the bar snacks are elevated as they say in the biz — we devoured the cheese and salami plate selected from local producers by the bar’s own fromagière.

There is a family flavor to the place — Della was Liz’s grandmother, and she is putting her Chicago roots on display with an Italian beef sandwich on the menu alongside the cheeses and salads. (I am guessing the menu is in progress, since they just opened on Wednesday.)

And there is more to come: four lines for draft beers, oysters driven in from Maine on Wednesdays, tasting flights, some signage and an awning for the facade. And reservations should be active by next week.
