Seen & Heard: Washington Market Park concerts start this week

WASHINGTON MARKET PARK CONCERTS COMING UP
The Friends of Washington Market Park will present its annual summer concert series starting on Thursday, June 16, with the Jonny Hirsch Band (at 5p); Rolie Polie Guacamole on Thursday, June 23, 5p; and my all-time fave Astrograss on Monday, June 27, 4p.

LOCAL CHEFS COOK FOR MEALS ON WHEELS
Citymeals on Wheels is holding its annual Chefs’ Tribute tonight, June 13, and several local chefs are participating: Daniel Boulud from Le Gratin; Matt Hoyle from Nobu Downtown; Toon Lau from Lil Chef Mama & Thank You Come Again; and Piero Minnicucci from Cipriani South Street at Casa Cipriani. This is a 35-year-old fundraiser that has raised millions over the years for the charity, which delivers meals to the homebound elderly. This year’s theme is “Neighborhoods of New York.” See more info here.

GREENMARKET OPENS AT THE OCULUS
Greenmarket at the Oculus is reopening for the season on Tuesday, June 14, on the Oculus Plaza at Fulton and Church. Hours are 8a to 5p, and to kick off the season, there will be live jazz courtesy of the Jazz Foundation from 11a to 1p. The market will be open on Tuesdays through Oct. 25. Some highlights: 1857 Handcrafted potato vodka from Schoharie County, NY; Francesca’s Bakery Breads and baked goods from Passaic County, NJ; Meredith’s Country Bakery Baked goods from Ulster County, NY; Riverine Ranch Water buffalo meat, beef and dairy from Warren County, NJ; Samascott Orchards & Nine Pin Ciderworks Orchard fruit, strawberries, cider, vegetables, baked goods, hard cider from Columbia County, NY.

DISNEY ON THE RISE
The old City Winery block at Varick and Spring is unrecognizable with the Disney HQ going up — I was totally confused about where I was when I went to check out Pine & Polk recently. It also made nostalgic for the old gritty low rise Hudson Square. Ah well.

  1. Thanks for the heads up greenmarket Occulus opens today w the vendor info. And news to me Disney HQ is being built Hudson Square. I have felt as if I’ve gotten lost in that area recently.

  2. re the new Disney HQ–i live nearby.
    i probably should reserve posting my opinion until the building is completed, but so far it is quite a HULKING mass.
