Seen & Heard: Emilia George to open maternity boutique

EMILIA GEORGE TO OPEN BOUTIQUE
Emilia George, the maternity fashion company founded by Tribecan Elle Wang, has taken a retail space in 325 Greenwich on the corner of Duane. She is planning a soft opening mid-August and a grand opening in September. “There are so so many kids stores in the area,” said Elle. “But moms need to buy more than just clothes for the kiddos.” This will round out the retail at 325 Greenwich, too, provided Chip City and Cafe Clementine can get through the DOB.

GREGORYS COFFEE HAS A CART ON CHAMBERS
Gregorys (there is no apostrophe – not sure why) Coffee, the chain founded in Manhattan in 2006 by NYC native Gregory Zamfotis, has a truck on the southwest corner of Chambers and Greenwich. There are three brick and mortar locations in Fidi plus another 20 more across the city.

THE $2 STRAWBERRY AT WHOLE FOODS
Whole Foods is now carrying hydroponic strawberries grown in a vertical indoor farm in New Jersey, and they cost $20 for 11. I think I have now seen it all. The brand is Oishii, and it was founded by Hiroki Koga, who was disappointed when he moved here and tasted American fruit. He brought Omakase Berry seeds from the Japanese Alps to New York and created the first indoor strawberry farm in 2019.

JAZZ AT LINDENS
Lindens, the newish restaurant at the Arlo hotel in Soho just over the border, just launched Jazz on Thursdays.

  1. For grammar fans, [Gregory Zamfotis] kept the apostrophe out of Gregorys Coffee just as Starbucks did when it based its name on a character from Herman Melville’s novel “Moby Dick.”

  2. The Gregorys cart really annoys me. The location isn’t the greatest pedestrian-crossing-wise and will be a nightmare when 234 is in session. And another corporate chain (if you’ve got more than 20 brick and mortar locations, you’re a corporate chain no matter the ownership structure) taking up public space with a lighted billboard and free standing street signs no less, just isn’t right (and can that sign on the back really be legal?). I thought getting street vendor licenses was impossible.
