What’s cooking/growing at the One White Street farm stand

This week was the first time I managed to get to the farm stand at One White Street — it is now open Tuesdays from 9 to 3. And what a treat.

The produce all comes from One White’s own farm in Ghent at the top of the Taconic, and the baked goods come from their kitchen right there. Everything is beautiful, but the buckwheat salted chocolate chunk cookies were lifechanging. Really. I should have bought the tray and frozen them, since the offerings change every week. This week had blueberry muffins, focaccia, prosciutto sandwiches and sourdough by the loaf or half loaf. Last week they had home-baked dog treats. Oh, and the coffee is free.

To give you a sense of the pricing, I bought two heads of chicory ($4 each), two bunches of wildflowers ($8 to $14) (which also have herbs in them – they smell incredible), one bunch of scallions, two fennel bulbs, a loaf of sourdough ($8), four chocolate chunk cookies ($5 each).

This is all in preparation for the opening of the shop next door, the former Café Clementine. They took the lease, and should have it open in about a month. (They are replacing the refrigeration and the floors currently.) At that point, the farm stand will be inside and open all the time (the hours are TBD).

The farm stand also carries products from their neighbors in Ghent. This week there was maple syrup and grains.

“We can combine our culinary expertise with our farming expertise,” said Tom Carney, the market driver. “People ask, ‘what can I do with this?’ and I can run inside and ask Chef Austin [Johnson].”

  1. What a great addition to our neighborhood. Combine that with our Green Markets on Greenwich St. and we won’t have to rely on Whole Foods for fresh produce and baked goods.
