Seen & Heard: Fire at Independence Plaza

BALCONY FIRE AT IPN
Sonia Stock caught this very dramatic shot of flames shooting out of a balcony at 80 N. Moore — the northernmost tower of Independence Plaza. (And the very cool shot below from S. is of the fire department response taken from the same floor.) Firefighters put it out from the inside quickly — I walked up minutes later and it was all over, with not even a scorch mark on the building (actually, see photo below). There were no injuries and no one was evacuated. Other tenants were in fact watching from neighboring balconies!

HUDSON SQUARE HAS PLANTED 500 TREES
The Hudson Square BID planted its 500th tree in its catchment area this spring, partnering with NYC Parks and its Tree Time program. They gave planted nine species, and created the walking route above so you can check out samples of each.

JOHN ALLAN’S CLOSED ON LAIGHT
The men’s membership-based grooming service is open in Midtown, but no longer in Tribeca. There’s a note on the door from the landlord that says they owe tens of thousands in back rent, but oddly the invoices are all from 2018… C. spotted their logo on a window on Washington, and L. said she heard they are moving somewhere on Hudson. I called and they said downtown was closed for now… I didn’t realize they had been in business since 1988…

MANICURE HOUSE CALLS?
This was a new one for me: Piers Laine is a manicure service that partners with residential buildings to offer manicures ($20) and pedicures ($50) in your home. Their latest client: Tribeca Tower on Duane. Didn’t know manicurists made house calls…
