Terra will close at the end of this month

C. emailed with some scoop: Terra, the restaurant in the wedge of a building just north of the Franklin Street station on West Broadway, will be closing that location and moving to the Sagra Pizza Bar space across the street, which they also own. I called and they confirmed. They will decamp at the end of this month.

The Terra folks declined to say why, only agreeing that it’s too bad. Both spots are super lively and great additions to the neighborhood. “Big loss for that corner in my opinion — Terra is amazing, especially outdoors in the summer,” C. noted.

Sagra is their third edition of the pizza bar concept. During the pandemic they opened in Miami and then in November 2021 opened a second on Carmine Street. They had closed Attraversa during the pandemic, but the landlord there encouraged them to come back. Smart.

But the new restaurant will convert the 225 West Broadway space to Terra, and Sagra will be no more.

Tanya Hira Passon and Roberto Passon opened Terra in 2013; at the time it was the couple’s third restaurant. (It was formerly Franklin Caffé Buon Gusto and 2Spaghi.) Roberto built the space himself and did a beautiful job, making sense of an awkward layout and taking advantage of the exposed beams, huge windows and loading dock for outdoor seating. (See below.) It must be hard to leave that behind…

  1. Agreed. Food was pretty bad although the setting outside is lovely.

  2. Beautiful place, great location, outdoor seating so nice, prices reasonable (for Tribeca)…but our one time dining there was the last. Food was nothing special, but the real problem was that service was nearly non-existent, and when it (rarely) appeared, it was rude. It felt like we were imposing on the staff that they actually had customers; they preferred to sit at the bar and play with their cell phone. We felt unwelcome, to say the least. So we stick with Petrarca, where we have never had a bad meal, and the staff always make us feel welcome.

I hope they address these issues in their new location, in which case we would gladly give it a try again.

  3. I’m very sad to see Sagra go! It was really nice to have somewhere to eat out and sit outdoors that was affordable. Their pies are really tasty!

  4. Terra was one of the best before the pandemic. After the pandemic, one of the worst experiences we’ve every had at a restaurant. They opened for lunch at 12, but the kitchen didn’t start until 12.30… So we waited for 40 minutes for our food. And agreed the staff seemed bothered we were there,as they playing with their phones the entire time.

Hopefully they inprove the help they hire. We probaby ate at Terra 25 times before the pandemic, it was fantastic.

  5. Why don’t these complainers save it for Yelp. It is as if they want a small business to fail.

  6. Such a shame for Terra to be leaving that awesome spot. Before the pandemic we loved grabbing a window seat, people watching, and enjoying some amazing food and wine. Always felt like a special night out. Really hope they re-focus on their quality and service because they really did have a special thing going.

  7. Great – very excited to see an overly expensive restaurant most people can’t afford, kids store, or a women’s exercise program take it’s place
