In the News: Another monument in The Battery…

A MONUMENT TO THE BOOTLEGGER BULLDOG
Untapped Cities has a story on the guerilla bulldog monument that popped up at The Battery. It’s the same jokester sculptor that had this fabulous monument to the time that the Staten Island Ferry was swamped by a giant octopus — Staten Islander Joe Reginella, who delights in creating urban myths. This one is modeled on his dog, Porkchop, and memorializes the bulldogs who served as whiskey-toting bootleggers during Prohibition. Of course. Check out his site here.

EDWARD ALBEE’S LOFT SELLS
Some lucky duck scored Edward Albee’s loft at 14 Harrison — the sale price was about $5.6 million; it was listed at nearly $9 million initially, according to The Times.

MORE ON THE CASE AGAINST JARED ENG
The Trib has a detailed account of the court case that unfolded around the murder of Tribecan Paul Chin, who was killed at her home at 17 Vestry by her son, Jared Eng.

ADVERTISING IN THE SKY
The Guardian had a story on the appearance of 500 drones that lit up the downtown shoreline on Thursday night, “flickering over the horizon in a choreographed dance meant to evoke the experience of swiping colorful treats on a phone screen. Promising a ‘surreal takeover of New York City’s skyline,’ the fleet will pulse with LED lights as it serves miles of Lower Manhattan with an aerial advertisement for the mobile video game, Candy Crush.” Did anyone catch it? So ridiculous.

  1. I was able to see it from the window in south BPC. The best part was the beginning, when you didn’t know what was going to happen, and there was a large strange blue light near the ground in the distance in NJ. It started moving closer and getting bigger and then dispersing and became the individual drones that started making the huge images. Then when it was over it reversed and sunk back into the ground in NJ. The technology was interesting but it seemed like a lot of expense to reach a relatively small audience because I don’t think it would have been visible much above the very lowest part of Manhattan.

  2. The drones are terrible. The helicopters are awful too btw. Need to legislate this stuff out of here.

  3. I walked all around where the Bulldog was supposed to be (by the carousel) on Sunday, but couldn’t find it. Has the Parks Dept removed it already??
