New Gallery on the Block: Galerie56

Architect Lee Mindel, of SheltonMindel, who lives on the third floor of 56 Leonard, has taken the retail space downstairs, opening Galerie56 — a division of Lee F. Mindel Architect — as a “platform for the intersection of art, architecture and design.”

This is a living above the store situation, Tribeca style. Mindel and his partner, José Marty, live just above the retail space and The Bean — their terrace has the white undulating sculpture and the apartment and art collection have been featured in all sorts of glossy mags. Mindel designed the sales office for Herzog & De Meuron, the architects behind the Jenga building, as well as dozens of apartments here and houses all over.

The first show, ‘Garden of Celestial Delights,’ featured important designs by architects and artists of Scandinavia, curated by Mindel in partnership with Jacksons Design and Dansk Mobelkunst. The current exhibit, titled ‘Noguchi to Perriand- East meets West.’ in collaboration with Galerie Downtown, from Paris, runs through Feb. 18, 2023.

AD has a fun video walk-through Mindel’s place. There’s mid-century furnishings from the original Four Seasons restaurant and a bicycle sculpture by Ai Weiwei. The sculpture that you can see from the street is by architect Marc Fornes.
