Sneak Peek: Tara Kitchen will open on Church tomorrow

Tara Kitchen, the Moroccan restaurant run by a husband-and-wife team out of the Albany area where they have several restaurants, will open tomorrow at 5p at 253 Church at Leonard/Franklin. They are still struggling with the SLA for a liquor license — even the temporary ones are two months behind. (And keep in mind this is not their first rodeo.) There will be mocktails, so good for Dry January.

When I stopped by last week chef Aneesa Waheed and her husband, Muntasim Shoaib, were still decorating and unpacking so I avoided shots of the whole space to give them more time, but I was able to catch a few details here. The decor will be lush, floral, colorful. More on the origin story here.

The entrees will be largely tagines (see below, sourced direct from France since Staub stopped inporting them recently) as well as salads and small plates. A sampling: honeyed baby eggplant with chickpeas and prunes; whole tomatoes stuffed with sweet and savory French green lentils; chicken breasts with figs, crisp almonds and spicy harissa; lamb meatballs in silky tomato sauce with poached eggs. It all sounds good.

The space (formerly Kori) has 32 seats and 10 at the bar. The plan now is to open 11a to 9p Tuesday to Sunday, and maybe till 10p on Friday and Saturday.

  1. My large extended family and I have been eating at Tara Kitchen in Troy, NY, for years. The food is fantastic. Always fresh. The flavors are deep and transport you to lands across the oceans. And, oh, what she does with figs! I dream about the warm fig salad. When friends from Bedford, MA, visit, we always visit Tara Kitchen. Then, they get another entire order to take home with them; that’s how good the food is! If you knew me, you would know I am not given to hyperbole. lol

  2. Just finished lunch there – one of the most wonderful, tasty, delicious meals I’ve had in a while. Every bite of each dish was our favorite — and the chef/owner is a fantastic human. We love it, we will be back.

  3. I just had lunch here and it was excellent! Very delicious food, great service, and very reasonably priced! I will definitely be back.

The eggplant meatballs and harissa sauce were my favs. A very welcome addition to the neighborhood!
