Nosy Neighbor: Why is Liberty Park closed?

J. wrote, “Went to walk across Liberty Park, but all entrances were closed. Will the park be closed all week? Is this a public park or private park?”

The answer to the first question is no. The park was closed for a day and a half (Jan. 9 & 10) for filming done by Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church with a drone. The Port Authority, which runs the park, closed it to pedestrians for safety and security reasons. The park reopened just after 1p yesterday.

The church will remain closed to the public for the rest of the week.

As to the second, more complicated question: it is a public park. However, as we all know with the 9/11 Memorial, the Port Authority, which runs the park, is more liberal with closings and restrictions than agencies designed to run public spaces, like the Parks Department. (That last part is my analysis.)

The park is open daily from 6a to 11p.

And some details:

  • The park is one acre.
  • It was opened in June 2016.
  • The Sphere was installed in 2017.
  • It is the roof of a parking garage — the Vehicular Security Center, which protects the site against unauthorized vehicles. The parking facility is linked to the concourse area, which feeds the entire 16-acre World Trade Center site.
  • It was designed by landscape architect Joseph Brown and constructed by Steven Dubner Landscaping.
  • The living wall, on the north side of the garage, was designed by Plant Connection of Riverhead

  1. Question for a future Nosy Neighbor — is there a reason the FDNY Ladder 8 (“Ghostbusters” firehouse) has had swarms of visitors, much more than the usual tourist traffic? Is something pointing more people there recently? Thanks!
