Seen & Heard: Removing Nazi collaborators from Broadway

NOT FOR THE CANYON OF HEROES
Borough President Mark Levine is asking the city to remove names of two French Nazi collaborators from plaques embedded in the sidewalks in the “Canyon of Heroes” on Broadway. Henri Philippe Pétain and Pierre Laval headed the infamous Nazi-controlled Vichy Government in France and, after the war, were convicted of treason for betraying France and its Jewish citizens – 75,000 of whom they deported to concentration camps. Both were hosted for ticker-tape parades in 1931, before their association with the Nazi Party, and were given plaques in 2004.

HELPING THE PS 234 NURSE
A three-alarm fire in Jersey City earlier this month destroyed the home of PS 234 nurse Chantel Roman, and her sister has created a GoFundMe page to help the family of five resettle. (Thanks to G. for sending.)

TRIBECA THERAPY HAS NEW MATERNITY PRACTICE
Tribeca Therapy has started a new practice, Tribeca Maternity, that offers in-person and online therapy for women, their partners, and their families to address the emotional experiences related to family planning, trying to conceive, pregnancy, childbirth, and early parenthood. Senior therapist Rachael Benjamin serves as the director, and the understanding is that women and their families’ concerns deserved a dedicated focus within the practice.

PS: When I saw the photos that the business was using on their website lately, I had to ask — and it turns out Matt Lundquist and his photographer, Lexie Moreland, drove around the city with his ACTUAL OFFICE FURNITURE and took these shots, guerilla style, on the streets. “We put it in a truck and drove all over, pulling it out and taking pics. It was a riot,” Matt said.

AMAZON DROP-OFF HOURS CHANGED
If you have gotten in the habit of dropping packages at the Amazon desk in Whole Foods (I started using the desk because we had so many packages being stolen from our building lobby last fall), they are changing their hours to 9a to 7p.

  1. Regarding the Canyon of Heroes, instead of erasing history, wouldn’t it be better to add a plaque in the sidewalk that described their later despicable actions? That would honor their victims and fulfill what I guess is Mr Levine’s intention.

  2. Such a plaque in the sidewalk is a good idea because it would give folks something else besides their telephones to read as they walk along —
