Another gallery defection from West Chelsea

Alexander Gray Associates, a gallery founded in 2006 by Alexander Gray with his husband, David Cabrera, will move to 384 Broadway, between Walker and White, in early 2024 from their current space on West 26th. (My photo is from 2017! Will update…)

The contemporary art gallery, which also has a space in Germantown, NY, focuses on artists who emerged in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.

One of these days soon I will do a gallery count, but this whole thing is really coming together with the gallery conversion of so many spaces on Broadway. This one is 7500 square feet and will be designed by Studio MDA, who have worked on many of the neighborhood’s galleries including Bortolami, PPOW, Andrew Kreps and Luhring Augustine. “Their design will preserve and spotlight the architectural details of the space: marble clad walls, ornate cast iron columns, tin ceilings, and wrought iron balustrades,” Gray said in an Instagram post announcing the move. “Since 2006, the Gallery has prioritized the exhibition of artworks in clean, defined galleries. This sensitivity to our public will continue in Tribeca, amidst a historic neighborhood of ground-breaking artistic practice and community. The Gallery, and our remarkable team, are invigorated as we enter this critical new chapter in the Gallery’s development, serving artists whose practices expand conversations about form, art history, and cultural contexts.”

  1. Fantastic! I love the proliferation of galleries in the neighborhood. (If it weren’t for these, I suspect we might have instead dozens of empty storefronts also). Very fortunate to have such immediate access to this ever-changing wide variety of artworks.
