Municipal Credit Union coming to Broadway and Chambers

Lest you get too excited by seeing the paper on the windows and some action inside, I am here to burst your bubble. The Municipal Credit Union office that is currently on Lafayette Street is moving to the southwest corner of Chambers and Broadway, that is 270 Broadway.

This building always surprises me when I look up.

Municipal Credit Union has been serving the financial needs of our members since 1916. The credit union was chartered in 1916 in response to the concern of Mayor John Purroy Mitchel (now there’s a new one for me! Is there a Mitchel anything out there? a high school? baseball field?), who wanted city employees to have a way to save at reasonable rates and a low cost borrowing alternative to loan sharks. MCU started out with one branch in the Municipal Building (1 Centre) using handwritten ledgers. At the end of the first year, 19 charter account holders had combined deposits of $570. Today, there are 16 branches, more than 500,000 members and over $4.2 billion in assets.
