Tribecan wins Oscar for Best Makeup for “The Whale”

Tribecan Judy Chin, along with partners Adrien Morot and Annemarie Bradley, took home the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling for her work on “The Whale,” which required transforming the actor Brendan Fraser into Charlie, an obese man living behind a computer screen who looks to form a bond with his estranged daughter.

The team worked their trade largely on prosthetics, since Fraser underwent hours of preparation each day to apply molded prosthetic skin to every part of his body, from chin to arms and legs.

Chin also did the makeup for the 2010 film “Black Swan,” where Natalie Portman’s character wore dramatic eye liner that covered her entire eyelid and temple, and was a BAFTA Film Award nominee for Best Make-Up and Hair for that film. Chin was makeup department head on more than 25 films, including Greta Gerwig‘s film “Little Women,” “Failure to Launch,” “The House of Sand and Fog,” and “Frida,” for which she won the BAFTA Film Award for Best Make-Up and Hair.

In television, she was the department head for “Sex and the City” for seasons 3 through 6 and received two Emmy Award nominations for her work as the key makeup artist and makeup department head for “Sex and the City” in both 2001 and 2003. She won the Hollywood Make-Up Artist Guild Award for Contemporary Make-Up for seasons 3 and 6.

  1. Yes! You go Judy!!
    Judy is an amazing artist!
In addition to her film work, she was the 1st person to volunteer her face painting skills in the ‘kids zone’ at TASTE OF TRIBECA. Many years ago she and her husband suggested this activity at a meeting. Judy made sample drawings, volunteered to train parents & donated her time for many years!
Jusy deserves this honor and more. She is humble and lovely.
    Bravo bravo
