Seen & Heard: MOCA president will be founding director at Smithsonian Women’s Museum

MOCA PRESIDENT MOVES TO THE SMITHSONIAN
Nancy Yao, who has been the president of MOCA, the Museum of Chinese in America on Centre Street since 2015, will leave this month to take on the role of the founding director of the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum. A national search for her successor is underway. Yao secured the future of MOCA on Centre Street and has been planning the new space with architects Maya Lin and Ralph Appelbaum. She also led the recovery from a devastating fire-alarm fire in January 2020, which damaged our Collections and Research Center, recovering the vast majority of artifacts and opening a new workshop center at 3 Howard.

SCHUBERT AT DCC
The Tribeca Chamber Players will host a free concert this Sunday, April 2, at 3:30p in the great hall at the Downtown Community Center at 120 Warren. The String Quintet in C Major by Franz Schubert is one of the last compositions Schubert finished before his untimely demise in 1828 at age 31. The quintet, scored for two cellos, two violins and a viola, was mostly forgotten for more than two decades after it was composed; the first performance occurred in 1850 and the score finally was published in 1853.
