Art in Tribeca: Hoodoos by Joan Benefiel

Finn Square has a new art installation from the city’s Art in the Parks program: Hoodoos by Joan Benefiel. The work is there, in the point at the southern tip at Leonard on Varick, until March 2024.

The piece is cast hand-tinted translucent resin with a Corten steel base and part of Benefiel’s “Cast in Light” sculpture collection. And from her studio’s press release: “The abstract figurative forms of this sculpture are inspired by the natural beauty of their namesake geological formations and appear to glow from within, ‘a metaphor for the light that is inside us all,’ says Benefiel.”

Hoodoos is Benefiel’s fourth NYC public art exhibition, including her inaugural Fashion District BID Art on the Plaza installation in 2010, and her monumental figure Breathe in front of the Distrikt Hotel in midtown in 2014. Benefiel is the founder of the Brooklyn-based Figuration Studio and along with partner Jeremy Leichman is alumna of the New York Academy of Art on Franklin, just around the corner.
