Patisserie Chanson removes its outdoor deck

Patisserie Chanson, or Chanson Le Salon, the restaurant on the corner of Harrison and Greenwich that opened in February 22, removed its raised deck this week, since it violated the Department of Transportation’s rules for Open Restaurants. UPDATE: It seems the deck might be within the building’s lot line. (Even a quick look at the city’s Open Restaurant rules shows that decks are prohibited.) I have to say, it’s nice to see the sidewalk back.

Either way, a citation was issued on May 12 and they had five days to remove it. They still have a curbside shed on Greenwich.

HOWEVER, there’s more. The restaurant was closed by the Department of Health on May 17. A quick check of the DOH’s ABCEats — their data base of restaurant ratings and inspections — shows that an inspection on May 16 netted 64 points in violations — which gives them a grade well below a D. A score between 0 and 13 points earns an A, 14 to 27 points receives a B and those with 28 or more a C. This time last year they had 34 violations, though I do not recall the restaurant closing.

UPDATE: The restaurant will reopened on Tuesday. The manager said they have made “drastic changes to the inside and condition of the restaurant.” They have been reinspected and will open with minimal points. UPDATE TWO: I visited the kitchens on Wednesday and will have another post next week.

(A restaurant has two chances to earn an A in every inspection cycle. If it doesn’t earn an A on the first inspection, it’s scored but ungraded. An inspector goes back to the restaurant unannounced, typically within a month, to inspect it again and the re-inspection is graded.)

The DOH violation notice is no longer on the door, but a sign there says they are closed for structural repairs.

Let’s hope they get this back on track. That is such a prominent corner in the neighborhood, and such a lovely one.

  1. You must have been there late than me – yesterday May 22 at 3:30 pm the yellow sign from the department of health saying they were shut down was still there. Well if you google Chanson Le Salon – they indicate they will open today – May 23 at 5:00
