Summer in the parks: so many events, so little time

All the neighborhood arts and parks organizations are starting to roll out their summer schedules and there is too much for me to get through per date or per event, so I am adding some highlights here. Comment if I missed something good. Then bookmark this page and return to it when you have an open night this summer. We are so lucky to live here.

Here goes:

WASHINGTON MARKET PARK
The Friends of Washington Market Park has a new website! Go to the events page for info on the following:
Music in the Park for toddlers (May 24, 31 and June 7)
Ladybug Day (June 11)
Concerts (June 11, 13 and 20)

DUANE PARK
The Friends of Duane Park will host its concerts once again on June 8, July 12 and August 10. See the musician lineup here.

BATTERY PARK CITY PARKS
Battery Park City has TONS of events, so the best way to check it out is to scroll through the calendar. There’s a week-by-week look and you can pick any week range you’d like — the summer events are already loaded up. And there is a full month at a glance, and you can link into any event on any day for more detail.

See the Battery Dance Festival below.

HUDSON RIVER PARK
Most of the park’s biggest events are in Midtown, but they are worth the travel. I love the dance festival the best (June 8 and 9 in Chelsea), though the Blues BBQ is rocking. Sunset on the Hudson dance events are at Christopher Street, and look for exercise classes and fishing events at Pier 25. The events calendar is really well organized in that you can search by date, by grid, or by category. See the calendar here.

THE BATTERY
There are events at The Battery several days a week, from history tours to performances in the Playscape, birding tours, flower arranging workshops. Check out the calendar here. It looks like they are still loading summer months…

GOVERNORS ISLAND
There is of course tons of programming at Governors Island all summer, but putting the free outdoor films first on your list. See the schedule here.

THE SEAPORT
The Seaport Museum’s sailing season on the 1885 schooner Pioneer and the 1930 tugboat W.O. Decker started May 24 with daytime, sunset, and programmatic sails around the harbor. See the sailing schedule here. You can also charter an entire ship. Then there are tons of programs at the museum itself; see those here.  And there are a lot of public events, like workouts, music, theater, at the Seaport hosted by Howard Hughes; see that schedule here.

RIVER TO RIVER ARTS FESTIVAL
JUNE 9 – 18
This takes place all over downtown and it’s all free. Featuring 12 presentations of dance, performance, public art installations, historic tours, and live music that reflects the interdisciplinary ethos of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. See the schedule here.

BATTERY DANCE FESTIVAL
AUGUST 12 – 18
Battery Dance hosts the 42nd Anniversary of its free summer festival from August 12-18 in partnership with Battery Park City Authority. There performances this year will all be at Rockefeller Park at 7p. For the lineup, visit batterydance.org/battery-dance-festival/.
