Made in Tribeca: Education by SR

Tribecan Stephanie Rosenfeld was a teacher at the JCP when the pandemic set in. Landing for what she thought was a couple weeks at her parents’ in the Hamptons, she was asked to set up a home school for a Tribeca family nearby and ended up teaching a mini home class of seven kids, and, well, she loved it.

“After doing that I couldn’t go back to the classroom — everything was on a higher learning curve and it presented a new challenge that I was ready for,” she said. So she set up her own tutoring company — Education by SR — and now has other certified teachers working with her. She and her colleagues see kids ages 2 to 8 — her favorite age range (“I think this is such a special time to work with kids”) — to work largely on the basics: numbers, letters, fine motor, gross motor.

“It should be fun for kids, and based on activities they like,” Stephanie said. “It shouldn’t be, ‘Sit down and we are going to write your name 20 times till you do it right.'”

Stephanie grew up here, going to Stephen Gaynor then York Prep, Tulane and finally Bank Street College of Education for her master’s in early childhood general and special ed. As a young child she dreaded school until a teacher reached her in the second grade — and later inspired her career in education.

In addition to one-on-one tutoring, the company also offers organizational skills coaching, kindergarten preparation for the younger set and will build a custom curriculum to support a child’s emotional or educational development.

“I love seeing the work I am doing pay off,” Stephanie says. “This work really gives kids more confidence in the classroom.”
