Clothing sold by the pound open on Reade

I happened by last week when the owner was stringing up the pennants: a new store has opened on Reade that sells clothing by the pound — for $4 per! It’s called Costbusters, and I assume that’s a reference to Hook & Ladder 8 on N. Moore. The tag line is “Greatest Prices on Earth” and the logo has George Washington’s head with dollar bills surrounding it.

This is sure a new thing for the Tribeca of today. Though N. noted when she sent me a pic: “This kind of store was on lots of side streets when we moved in 31 years ago!”

This is the former Ward III bar space, which was scheduled to be another bar called Winston’s; I *just* took a photo the other day, to see if they had made any progress.

The owner of Costbusters told me he was hoping to make it permanent if it went well, but clearly he did not take a long-term lease. I asked where he got the clothes and he said, “If I told you I’d have to kill you.” LOVE IT.

I will get in there soon to check out the threads. In the meantime, as N. said, “Doesn’t quite go with the rest of the semi-gentrified retail on that block of Reade but it’s better than another illegal cannabis shop!”

  1. Is it $4 per pound or (as pictured) $3 per pound. This will determine if I’m going to check it out or not. LOL

  2. It will be interesting to see how it compares to goodwill.

  3. I am still wearing lovely cashmere sweaters I scored from the ‘Hidden Treasures’ store, that was on Warren Street until 2011, as well as bedding, coats; great finds…. hope to find a similar situation.
In those days we knew where the clothing was coming from and it wasn’t a secret. I promise not to divulge.
Better in your bin-boxes than a landfill.
