Community Board 1 agendas for April

Community Board 1 has returned to in-person meetings; however the public is encouraged to use Webex live due to capacity constraints. Meetings are also recorded and posted to the board’s YouTube page. You can also find documents and draft resolutions here. As always, contact the board at man01@cb.nyc.gov. My comments in caps.

  1. 177 Duane is a ridiculous location for a dispensary—Washington Market School, PS 234, Duane Park, Washington Market Park, and BMCC all within 500 feet.

    • Every legal dispensary has security that checks IDs. This is nothing to do with a school. No teen is getting pot from a legal dispensary. If they do get it, they get it from the illegal market so kids need to know there is a difference at the very least. It’s called right and wrong. Or you can pull the wool over their eyes and baby them. But then why are you raising kids in a city like New York?

  2. 177 Duane – is this April Fools? Right next to a neighborhood bakery (and across the street from another), within a few hundred feet of multiple parks, close to multiple daycares and in the most family friendly stretch of the neighborhood? I have no issues with dispensaries in the area but this just boggles my mind.

    • It is not! (Unless CB1 was pranking.) There are specific rules, and it applies to schools, not daycares. I have not checked this site carefully, but my guess is it will fit. Next to a bakery makes some sense…

  3. ABSOULTELY NOT!!! We need to show up to these CB1 meeting and shut this down. This will be a reminder on my calendar to attend. One voice is NOT enough! We have ENOUGH illegals shops in the neighborhood. First get rid of the one on Chambers street by 16 Handles who is in violations of the 500 feet rule of PS 234

    • Why would you want to block a legal business because another non-connected business is doing something illegal. That makes no sense. The market needs to expand legal options for people so they are not searching and only finding the black market. A properly run legal weed shop is a benefit to a community. This is just stupid NIMBYism and racism with no point.

  4. I’ve got to say that poster Michael T. is the voice of reason here and I really wish people would pay attention to [his] posts so we could forgo the endless prattle about LEGAL dispensaries not being able to establish themselves like any other legal business in NYC. If it were another wine shop no one would bat an eyelash. Legal dispensaries in this city are expertly run (I’ve no knowledge of the party petitioning in this case). They have guards, they check ID, etc. etc. I agree with the poster who encourages shutting down the illegal shops asap. The legal ones benefit the state greatly in numerous monetary ways. I would like to respectfully request that those who keep sending up this whine about legal dispensaries use that energy in more rational pursuits. Your kids aren’t walking into dispensaries and acquiring cannabis, questionable folks aren’t welcome at these legal shops, and kids _certainly_ aren’t learning about this subject for the first time as a result of a shop opening.

    • Yep. Shut down the illegal shops and let the highly regulated, legal ones open, and stop making it so difficult for them. The dearth of legal options has contributed to the mind boggling number of ugly, garish illegal shops, with highly questionable product. And they definitely aren’t checking your kids’ ID.

As I said on a CP thread: the existence of some bad actors that are unrelated to the goals of law abiding citizens and businesses should not stop us from supporting the latter, and in this case, hopefully it will be at the expense of the former.

  5. No disrespect intended in this, but I’d like to understand your policy about removing comments (perhaps you’ve posted it and I missed it).

I ask, because there were numerous comments on this piece a day or two ago, including one of my own, and now they’re reduced to three. (I don’t recall anything outrageous being written by anyone.)

These discussions can become rancorous, and I can see that as being a reason for removing comments in their entirety. I’m curious to know your methodology.

  6. Actually, the links above are reversed. Clicking on the latter shows me only 3 comments.

  7. One could argue that a weed shop next to a bakery will be a boon for the bakery- but people don’t consume in the dispensary- they just buy and go eslewhere to enjoy.
my concern is the potential for robbiers/burlaries bc it is an all cash business. most have guards( are they armed?) and that situation make me uneasy, to put it mildly.
i agree that more legal shops should open in hopes of driving out the illegals, but not next to my bakery. i guess that make me a NIMBY? it is hard enough to keep my head above water, especially since my new lanldlord( smae lanlord who will rent to the disoensary) has raised my rent greatly and i think a dispensary will NOT help me at all. there are plenty of empty storefronts in our neighborhood- many on streets with far more foot traffic.
i plan to urge CB1 to vote this down.
