Kids These Days: Sports equipment drive at Duane Park this Saturday

Young Tribecans Max and Lila Schafer are organizing a used sports equipment drive this Saturday, April 20, in Duane Park, collecting gear between 10a and 1p and donating it to the Hudson Guild in Chelsea.

They will be taking soccer balls, basketballs, tennis rackets, lacrosse sticks — any kind of gear — sorting it and getting it ready for pick up on Saturday by the Hudson Guild.

The idea started at their father’s gym (ARC Athletics), when they realized the family had a lot of unused sports equipment lying around. Plus it was time for spring cleaning, so they put the two together.

“We thought Earth Day, sustainability, why not?” Max said. He’s 16 and Lila is 14. “A lot of the kids I grew up with here in Tribeca have outgrown their equipment or moved on to a different sport and we knew there would be a lot of stuff out there.”

Lila was assigned to find the charity. A Google search came up with the Hudson Guild, the settlement house in the public housing development in West Chelsea; she emailed them thanks to help with a family friend, and the connection was made.

“It was one of the first charities that popped up in our search and we realized it was exactly what we were looking for,” Lila said.

The kids will set up with bins and tables; a bunch of their friends have agreed to help out to sort and box things up.

And if you are looking for other ways to clear out the house, Friends of Duane Park will be holding their annual Shred Day simultaneously.
