A 16-year-old boy was shot in the head and killed yesterday afternoon in the public plaza next to The Dominick hotel on Spring Street, police reported.

Mahki Brown, who lived at 60 East 93rd Street in Brooklyn, had a gunshot wound to the head and a gunshot wound to the right thigh when police arrived at 2:27 p.m. EMS transported him to NYC Health and Hospitals/Bellevue where he was pronounced deceased. There are no arrests at this time and the investigation remains ongoing.

The Daily News reported that witnesses said that the boy intervened in an argument between two groups of girls in the courtyard. Another teen stepped in to defend a girl in the opposing group and fired several shots. The suspect then left on a Citi Bike.

The Daily News said that he attended a nearby high school. There are several in the area, including the two schools at 131 Sixth between Dominick and Broome — the NYC iSchool and Chelsea Career and Technical Education High School — and Broome Street Academy Charter High School next door.
