Seen & Heard: Concert this week in Washington Market Park

CONCERT THIS WEEK IN WASHINGTON MARKET PARK
The Friends of Washington Market Park will host the first of its concerts for the summer this Thursday, June 13, from 5 to 6:30p. This week is Jonny Hirsch; June 20 is Rolie Polie Guacamole. JCP Downtown partially sponsored the June 20th concert.

THE ODEON UNDER WRAPS
It looks like the Tribeca Film Festival took over the Odeon and then some, shutting down not only the sidewalk in front of the restaurant but also the sidewalk on the west side of West Broadway. (Thanks to H. and J. for the pics.) Must have been some serious VIPs in there!

SOUTH COVE PERFORMANCE
As part of the River to River Festival, there will be two performances of John P. Hasting’s “South Cove Song,” a site-specific music performance featuring a brass ensemble, on June 16 at 4p and 6p in Battery Park City’s South Cove. “The performance is partly an homage to Mary Miss’s work, while also drawing inspiration from the musical and textual accretion of materials, 17th century Dutch melodies, Romantic-era seafaring novels, and the contemporary resiliency plans for Lower Manhattan designed to mitigate against unstoppable natural forces.” More info here.

A GOOD SIGN?
My mother always said seeing a dead squirrel on the road was a good sign for the squirrels — that it meant the squirrel population is healthy. So as gruesome as it may be, M. was also excited to see this floating in the river just off the bulkhead behind Stuy. “There was a lively conversation at the promenade!” she said. I checked with the experts at Hudson River Park and it is indeed a sturgeon — just like the two giant play sculptures at Pier 26. Hard to say whether it’s Atlantic or shortnose based on the picture, but likely Atlantic…
