DENES’ WHEATFIELD AT ART BASEL
Artist Agnes Denes revived her iconic 1982 Public Art Fund commission, Wheatfields for Manhattan, at Art Basel, turning Basel’s Messeplatz into a wheat field. When it was first exhibited, Denes cultivated an acres of wheat in the empty lots that would eventually become Battery Park City. This new piece, “Honouring Wheatfield – A Confrontation,” ”demands viewers’ attention to be redirected toward what Denes identifies as today’s most pressing priorities: ‘food, energy, commerce, world trade, economics,’ as well as ‘mismanagement, waste, world hunger, and ecological concerns.'” There’s a good Q&A with Denes here.
