Zona has removed it’s sidewalk shed, which was probably the most blatant abuse of what was a pretty cool covid program to help neighborhood restaurants. When done correctly, we had some really lovely curbside seating; when abused, we had cramped and darkened sidewalks for pedestrians, ugly additions to the streetscape and what looked like some questionable practices, like running extension cords across the sidewalk to power air conditioners outside.
ALL curbside dining structures — the ones set up in the road — have to be removed by Nov. 29.
Sidewalk cafes are permitted year-round.
In both cases, the restaurants have to apply through the Department of Transportation via the community boards. I’ve seen a few come through Community Board 1’s licensing committee (Maman, Laughing Man, Benvenuto) but not a ton…
Della’s shed, the cute set up that Frankly Wines had on West Broadway, just came down this week. Houseman discovered a sort-of covid time capsule when they dissembled their shed: their original outdoor setup from four years ago included a painted roadbed.

I hope they power wash afterwards. Such a filthy mess.
Why no mention of the dumpster that was in front of Bubby’s?
Good riddance! Adios!
This went on way too long. At various times there was a mattress laid across tables in one of the sheds and I saw someone who worked at the restaurant sleeping. The rats also were very active in and around all of those sheds.
I don’t think that I ever saw an uglier shed then that mess of plywood and high school shop class design. They will probably leave their construction trash in the street for weeks. The sidewalk shed needs to go too.
What about those hideous ones at Greenwich tavern? Still there 11/27.
It may have been unsightly, but a row of parked cars isn’t any better. Just a failure of vision. Why not fund parklets in place of the dining sheds? So now 4 cars can park there.
Tribeca Citizen – can you please investigate/report whether Walker’s, Bubbys and other places that still have outdoor facitlies blocking sidewalks are in compliance ?
All curbside sheds should have been down by Nov. 29. If not, they will get fined. Sidewalk cafes can be year-round.
Amazing how many local Karens there are. Outdoor sheds have given, and still do give, many restaurants much needed extra capacity. I really loved being able to see extra seating at a few of my favorite local spots. Zona was a huge Godsend during covid; they were always busy, and they were always open. No crazy rules, and they didn’t seem to think any of the insane Covid restrictions were worthy of adherence – something I, and now many others, believe were justified actions. Nightlife is what makes Manhattan Manhattan. If people want peace and quiet, they should move to the suburbs.
