Catching Up With New Kids: Coffee Project

It’s been nearly a year since Coffee Project New York opened its latest location on Washington and Desbrosses — its seventh in the city — and I am just catching up. This is the old Fika space, and it’s still a bright corner with a great Tribeca view. They have lined the floor-to-ceiling  windows at the corner with bar seating to watch the world go by, and there’s table seating along the south windows too.

Big Gay Ice Cream shares the space — they opened earlier in 2024. The Greek is on the other end at Watts.

The founders of Coffee Project are Chi Sum Ngai and Kaleena Teoh, a married couple who quit their tech jobs and opened a coffee shop as a passion project in the East Village in 2015. They now roast their own beans, sell wholesale and offer classes on all things coffee. The company’s Long Island City location includes a training campus for coffee professionals and enthusiasts.

The menu includes sandwiches and pastries and all the milk options, including a Deconstructed Latte with oat milk. I will leave it to others to judge the coffee; the open face smoked salmon toast was a treat, though at $18, maybe not a repeat.
