April 7, 2025 Restaurant/Bar News
Five & Dime, the aptly named coffee shop and cocktail bar that was in the base of the Woolworth Building at 9 Park Place, closed permanently on March 22. They announced the news on Instagram. (Thanks to D. and E. for catching the post.)
This is a loss. It was a charming space and a great idea.
The cafe opened in 2017, the passion project of Dr. Mark Mohrmann, whose orthopedics practice is nearby. He and his architects made the space live up to the building pedigree, with tiled floors, vaulted ceilings, a horseshoe marble bar, leather banquettes, extensive brass details. “I love Lower Manhattan so much,” Mohrmann, who also lives nearby, said at the time. “I felt pressure to do justice to the building. We’re right off the lobby! You can’t compete with it, but we could at least be in the ballpark.”
And for all of you too young to remember: The Five & Dime name was a nod to the Woolworth Corporation’s discount stores: “A nickel or dime would buy any item in the store,” as per the Saturday Evening Post.

Looks great. This is very sad that it is closing; i didn’t even know about this place but wish I had known, as I would have supported and frequented it. I hope someone takes it over with the same concept and finds a way to make it viable.
This is such a massive loss. I was there the day it opened. It was a spot and a vibe like no other. Every inch of it was wonderful. It was always my go-to spot to meet people.
Thanks for all the great memories Doc.
I had no clue this place was there! Looks beautiful they should find another experienced operator and spent the money on marketing and ads. I think tribeca citizen should highlight places that are amazing and unknown so we can support them
I cover news — so when they open, or if something changes, like hours or major offerings. But the comments section is a good place for folks to highlight places they love.
Understood, and your coverage is much appreciated! I was in no way blaming you or Tribeca Citizen for my own ignorance of this place’s existence; just mourning its loss before I even knew it.
Love this place. Coffee by day. Drinks at night.
There are NO gay bars downtown. We have thought a lot about opening a gay night or gay bar (classy cocktail bar) downtown called the Three Dollar Bill or the Wooly.
I have hosted events in the Five and Dime. Very sad!!!
