Soho Photo Gallery has moved to Chelsea

In a reverse migration, Soho Photo Gallery has moved its gallery to Chelsea after 45 years in Tribeca. Maybe it’s just a righting of the ship: both of the Tribeca institutions with Soho names — Soho Rep and now Soho Photo — have left the neighborhood.

The gallery was founded in 1971 by a group of New York Times photographers who wanted to create a venue for photography as fine art. It’s now a non-profit arts organization operated by the member photographers. They moved to 15 White in 1979 and exhibit a wide range of fine-art photography including individual member shows, gallery-wide themed exhibits, national competitions and prestigious guest exhibitions.

The new space is at 539 West 23rd, just west of The High Line between 10th and 11th. They opened there on April 16 with a member group show called “Move / Moving / Movement” curated by Julie Grahame. It’s up till May 25.
